Using Rain Barrels on Gutters

Many people are now concerned about the environment and what they can do to conserve it. Rain barrels are used to store the water that drains during a rain, and can be used for many different purposes. These barrels are connected to the downspout of a guttering system, and can keep the gutters from overflowing into the yard.

There is generally a spigot at the bottom of the rain barrel to allow for a hose to be hooked up to it. Although there is no pressure to push the water out, by placing a barrel at an elevated level, one can water their flowers, lawn, or even wash their car.
The most efficient materials used in making rain barrels are plastic and wood. Plastic barrels are lightweight and more cost-friendly. Wood barrels are also a good choice because they are durable and easy to move. They also add a certain visually pleasing quality to the appearance of a home.

Although it is possible to make rain barrels, it is more than likely less expensive to buy one. It is important to carefully construct the barrel so that all the seals are tight. If the seals around the spigot and downspout are not airtight, bugs can inhabit the barrel and negate the whole process of trying to conserve water.

No matter what the reason for utilizing a rain barrel, the structure proves beneficial in the fight to preserve our resources and provide fresh, clean water to use for around-the-house duties. Since they are low in cost and easy to use, rain barrels are now becoming quite popular among the environment-friendly households throughout.
